FAQ
What is Hal Leonard Connect?
Hal Leonard Connect is our program for bringing Hal Leonard's catalog to retailers, dealers and education resellers digitally, so they can offer instant, fully licensed sheet music to their own customers without carrying inventory or building their own technology. Hal Leonard handles the catalog, licensing, content protection, delivery, and reporting; the retailer keeps their own storefront, brand and customer relationship. MakeMusic Shop is one of the first channels live on Connect, with more partners expected to follow.
What's in the catalog?
The entire Hal Leonard sheet music digital library, which includes approximately 428,000+ digital titles assets.Including PDFs, interactive scores, band parts, MP3s, video lessons.
We'd like to offer Hal Leonard titles digitally on our own platforms via Hal Leonard Connect — how do we start?
We're excited to work with any partner, existing or new, who wants to reach new audiences of music learners and consumers. This is exactly what Hal Leonard Connect™ is for. Please get in touch with us here via this form.
How is this different from buying from Hal Leonard?
Hal Leonard Connect isn't a replacement for existing partnerships, but it's a way to extend the same kind of distribution relationship to more retailers, in a lighter-weight, faster-to-launch form. Depending on a partner's size and technical setup, Connect offers a few different ways to integrate, so both smaller specialty retailers and larger dealers can take part. As with all our distribution channels, existing rights, territories and exclusivity terms are unaffected, and reporting flows through Hal Leonard's standard processes.
How is this different from Sheet Music Direct in-store?
Both let you sell Hal Leonard digital sheet music, many retailers run both. Sheet Music Direct in-store is a white-label service. You embed it in your site, and your customers download and print a piece of music. It covers single sheets and choral titles. HL Connect is an API integration into your own shop. Your customers buy the product in your checkout, and receive a digital file they keep. It’s theirs to print now, or open again in two years. Also, the catalog is broader, and it includes categories SMD in-store never carried, including band.
What integration is required?
We’ll match the setup to your team and tech. Get in touch to learn more.
Does it work with Shopify, WooCommerce, custom builds?
HL Connect is an API and SDK platform, so it fits any store with a backend you control — custom builds, WooCommerce, headless. Hosted platforms like Shopify work through a small middleware app rather than a direct install. We'll scope the right shape with your dev.
Who handles delivery, refunds, support?
You are responsible for providing customer service sales support to your website's customers. Although we will not interact directly with your customers, Hal Leonard will work with your team's customer support reps to provide 2nd tier support if there is an issue with a purchased asset. Although rare, sometimes a PDF or other type of asset may be engraved or archived incorrectly in our system: if this is the case, then our in-house digital team will work with your customer support team to resolve the issue. HL Please provide your website address, the asset ID in question, and contact us at instore@digitalretailer.halleonard.com for support.
Who owns the customer relationships?
You do! You keep ownership of your storefront, brand, and customer relationships.
Which catalogs can be licensed and which can't?
Your catalog access is defined in your Hal Leonard vendor agreement and enforced automatically — the API returns only the products you're licensed to sell. Talk to us about scope for your market.
How is usage reported?
Every sale is reported in real time. When a customer buys, your backend registers the transaction with us — asset, quantity, the price you charged, and the customer's country. Your dashboard shows every order with full detail (status, prices, country, delivery links), so support and finance can look up any transaction. Your catalog price is what you owe Hal Leonard per sale; the price you charge your customer is yours to set.
Available formats, are they static or interactive notation?
Products are delivered either as downloadable files or via a secure online viewer, depending on the asset. Available formats are listed in the catalog metadata for each product.
How is territory handled?
Territory is enforced per product, before you charge. Before payment you call a validation endpoint; we check whether the product is available in that customer's region. If it isn't, you find out before taking their money rather than refunding afterwards. Each registered sale also records the customer's country.
